Impli to accelerate real-time hormone monitoring at PHTA

We’re proud to welcome Impli as the first commercial lab resident at PHTA, marking an exciting milestone for Birmingham’s health and life sciences district. Focusing initially on improving women’s health, Impli’s platform is designed to help clinicians understand hormonal fluctuations and make better-informed treatment decisions for menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and across fertility pathways including IVF.

Its subdermal sensor detects and continuously monitors biomarkers in interstitial fluid, transmitting data in real time to its advanced dashboard. By revealing shifts in stress, metabolism and fertility as they happen, Impli delivers the biointerface that will make personalised precision medicine a reality.

Originally spun out of Imperial College London after more than a decade of research and development, Impli has chosen to expand to PHTA in Birmingham as the next stage in its growth journey - and they're already hiring.

Anna-Luisa Schaffgotsch, Founder and CEO of Impli, said: “Women’s health has long lacked the data needed to deliver truly personalised care. Hormones are currently measured through occasional blood tests that provide only a single snapshot in time, and our technology is changing that by turning snapshots into a continuous picture of what is happening inside the body.

“Establishing our new laboratory at PHTA gives us the environment we need to scale. Birmingham offers outstanding scientific talent, strong operational capability and access to the diverse clinical ecosystem that will be vital as we move towards first-in-human studies and future manufacturing.”

Choosing lab space: a guide for life sciences start-ups

Competition for high-quality lab space is intense, particularly in established clusters like Oxford and Cambridge. That's pushing more founders to think carefully about what they actually need from a space, and where they might be able to grow more sustainably.

We've pulled together a practical guide covering some of the key things worth considering early on: from lab specification and compliance, to what's included in your agreement, and why the wider innovation ecosystem matters just as much as the bench space itself.

Every ambitious start-up needs a first base ⚾

PHTA's hotdesks and shared office spaces put you at the heart of Birmingham's health and life sciences district, and they're ready and waiting for you.

Whether you’re a start-up founder, researcher, or part of a growing team, our flexible workspaces are custom-designed for collaboration and world-class research, helping you to scale faster.

Bookings are open to all sectors, at just £20 per day, and the hot drinks are on us. Get in touch to check availability and book your space.

Great science is only the starting point: commercial growth comes from getting the business basics right.

The PHTA Founder Growth Series is a practical workshop programme designed to support early-stage founders building their life science and healthtech businesses.

There are 2 out of a series of 5 sessions still to come, where our expert trainer John Cooke will cover:

  • Go-to-market strategy for early growth (28 May)
  • Making the most of grants and tax reliefs (25 June)

All sessions are live on our website - register for free ⬇️

You think it, we make it

Design, prototyping, and iteration are essential stages in developing any medical device or healthcare product - yet also the most resource-intensive. The high cost of equipment, combined with the time and expertise needed to use it well, can stall progress or stop development altogether.

PHTA’s Makerspace is purpose-built to remove these barriers and bridge the gap between ideas and impact. It offers access to a wide range of cutting-edge prototyping equipment (including 3D printers and laser cutters), along with support from experienced technical operators.
