Up-close innovation: PHTA opens doors to Selly Oak students

Selly Oak teens will have the chance to explore the world of medical innovation thanks to a new partnership between local schools and the University of Birmingham’s Precision Health Technologies Accelerator (PHTA).

PHTA, which opened in 2025, helps businesses developing new medical devices and treatments to grow. Its health and life sciences research facilities include the multimillion-pound Makerspace, which is fully equipped with the latest 3D printing kit and design software to create medtech prototypes and models.

Teachers in the local area will be able to bring students to PHTA to learn skills which are highly relevant to the jobs of the future, from medical device design and development to materials science and engineering.

The partnership was convened by Birmingham Selly Oak MP Al Carns during one of his regular catch-up meetings with secondary school headteachers in the constituency. He said: “I’m thrilled that young people in Selly Oak will now be able to see science and innovation up close. Giving students hands-on experience with cutting-edge medical technology not only inspires curiosity but also opens doors to careers in fields they might never have imagined. This partnership ensures our local talent has the skills and confidence to thrive in the jobs of the future.”

PHTA’s Chief Executive Officer Professor Gino Martini explained: “As the son of a refugee and an economic migrant, science and education have given me a world of opportunities, from a rewarding career to the chance to travel the globe. My commitment is that PHTA will always be available to help upskill the local community – particularly among those who may not see themselves in scientific careers – and help them to access the training that will lead them into well-paid jobs that benefit patients worldwide.”

All secondary schools in the Selly Oak constituency are invited to use PHTA’s Makerspace and facilities as part of their science, technology or design curriculum, or to supplement careers guidance programmes. To explore the opportunities, email makerspace@phta.co.uk.
