You think it, we make it: introducing PHTA’s Makerspace

Design. Prototyping. Iteration: key stages in the development of any product. But for many small and medium-sized medtech companies, they’re also the biggest roadblocks. The cost of equipment alone can be steep, and having the right skills to run that equipment takes both time and money. This all means that often these stages are what halts, and in some cases ends, the product development lifecycle

The PHTA Makerspace is here to change that.

Based at the University of Birmingham’s Precision Health Technologies Accelerator, at Birmingham Health Innovation Campus, the Makerspace offers hands-on access to a full suite of professional tools for medtech development, plus the expert guidance and training needed to use them. It’s not just a workshop – it’s a launchpad for innovators looking to turn concepts into tangible products.

What’s inside?

The space is kitted out with a comprehensive range of machines to support every step of the prototyping process. Whether you’re building a basic 3D model or testing the structural limits of your design, there’s something (or someone!) here to help.

Here’s a taste of what you’ll find:

  • 3D Printers (FDM and SLA): Print parts in PLA, TPU or PETG on the FDM machines, or opt for high-resolution, flexible or even biocompatible parts with the SLA printer
  • Laser cutter: Ideal for 2D cutting and engraving of materials like Perspex, plywood, rubber, fabric, and card
  • Manual tools and machinery: A range of hand tools, power tools, plus a small lathe and milling station to support light metal work and more advanced prototyping
  • Electronics workstations: Includes soldering, desoldering and hot air reflow kits, plus power supplies, oscilloscopes and function generators to help with electrical system development
  • Inspection and reverse engineering tools: A digital microscope and 3D scanner enable precise part inspection and the ability to integrate with existing systems or re-create discontinued components

Finally, and one of most exciting additions – our BMF S240 microprinter enables the creation of micron-scale features, such as channels for microfluidic devices.

Why it matters

The Makerspace is more than just a collection of high-spec machines. It’s a space designed to remove barriers – giving innovators, start-ups and research teams the tools they need to move faster, prototype smarter, and bring their ideas to life without breaking the bank.

Whether you’re a medtech startup, a clinician with a clever device idea, or a researcher exploring new fabrication methods, the PHTA Makerspace opens the door to rapid, high-quality development – with expert support every step of the way.
