HORIBA establishes Birmingham base for life sciences at PHTA

HORIBA, a global leader in analytical and measurement solutions that support biotherapeutics development and manufacturing, is the latest company to become part of the PHTA community at the heart of Birmingham’s health and life sciences quarter.

HORIBA develops and delivers innovative analytical, diagnostic and automation solutions that support the life sciences industry, from drug development and biopharmaceutical manufacturing to clinical diagnostics that transform the healthcare journey. Working closely with its customers, HORIBA provides technologies for microbial testing, protein analysis and characterisation, process analytical technology (PAT), product integrity and quality assurance and in vitro diagnostics (IVD) solutions. These solutions help accelerate innovation and optimise processes. By enabling deeper scientific and clinical insights across the healthcare journey, HORIBA supports advances from R&D through to commercial production, diagnosis and treatment, ultimately contributing to improved patient outcomes.

As part of the PHTA ecosystem, HORIBA will benefit from access to world-class, multidisciplinary expertise at the University of Birmingham, as well as clinicians and researchers at the co-located Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and Birmingham Women’s Hospital.

A key initial focus will be to bring a novel in-vitro diagnostic to the UK and EU market, which is designed to improve outcomes for patients with heart failure and rapidly diagnosing endocrine and fluid-balance conditions such as SIADH*, both in the community and in hospitals.

Professor Gino Martini, Chief Executive Officer of PHTA, said: “HORIBA’s technology is used in labs and clinics worldwide, enabling diagnosis and treatment of disease; ensuring product quality and consistency in pharmaceutical manufacturing; and furthering scientists’ understanding of novel molecules and drug candidates. We are delighted that PHTA will play a role in their future development and look forward to supporting them.”

Declan Allen, President UK & Ireland for HORIBA said: “HORIBA’s expertise in medical diagnostics is well recognised in Europe with our Montpellier centre of excellence serving over 30,000 laboratories worldwide. As we are now building a business case for investment into the UK for our future technologies,  PHTA is a crucial partner in this by enabling us to access development facilities and research capability to support the transfer of industrial technology to medical diagnostics which improve NHS productivity and most importantly patient care. Birmingham and the wider Midlands region provides a strong testbed foundation for us to build on.”
